The lower reservoir was empty when we visited but are sure it would be very different after heavy rainfall. The woodland paths were beautiful and there are benches throughout which would make the perfect spot for a picnic.

Getting there & parking

There are a few car park options with this one, we parked in the lower car park, S42 7JW. It was only a short walk to the reservoirs from here.

The route

This is a circular route, you’ll cross the middle dam wall, walk through the woods one side then cross over the top dam before heading back through the woods the original side.

Tips & what to bring

A beautiful and accessible route for all year round. Some people mention bringing change for the car park machines but we didn’t have a problem with them.

Eat & drink nearby

Chesterfield town centre is a short drive away with lots of choice for food and drinks. We love the midweek Pizza Hut buffet for Β£10 on the retail park.
