Join free to downloadIf you’re into your history and want a short walk with great views across the Peak District moorland then this short out and back route from Beeley Moor to the Bronze Age burial site of Hob Hurst’s House just above Chatsworth House is a great option.
What to expect
The path up here can get a little wild but it is typically well trodden and there are signposts directing you all the way as soon as you leave the main track near the start of your walk.
Dating back to 1000BC Hob Hirst’s House is unique as unlike many other burials from the same period, this one is rectangular rather than circular. The site itself is managed by English Heritage and is free to visit, although it was quite overgrown when we went, we could still make out the 8m x 8m central square cairn. It became one of the first monuments in Britain protected under the ancient monuments act in 1882.
Getting there & parking
There’s free parking along the roadside on Beeley Moor, use postcode DE4 2NS. As this through road has been closed for many years and theres no plans to open it anytime soon, it’s often used as a park up by walkers on both sides, although designated parking here is limited.

The route
You’ll follow the farm track on the road bend towards a gate, after going over the stile here you’ll see a footpath sign to the right to Hob Hurst’s House, follow this for about a mile, you’ll cross moorland, walk up by a stone wall before reaching the burial site. This is an out and back, so head back the same way to return to your car.

Good boots for the uneven ground and possibly wet bracken underfoot.
Eat & drink nearby
This walk is on Beeley Moor between the towns of Matlock, Chesterfield and Bakewell, these are all about a 15 minute car ride away with lots of food & drink options. If you prefer something more local, theres a tea room & restaurant on the Chatsworth Estate (although were yet to eat at these yet).
