Parts of this route can get very overgrown.
Beeley, Robin Hood & Chatsworth Parkland Circular

If you’re looking to escape the crowds but also tick off one of the Peak Districts most famous landmarks, then this beautiful circular route takes you across Beeley Moor, down some rarely trodden footpaths and into the back of the Chatsworth Estate. We have been to Chatsworth so many times, but ticked off so many firsts on this walk.

What to expect

You start off on a good country lane, walking is easy as is the route to follow but it doesn’t stay this way forever. We followed the little wooden signs to Hob Hurst’s House which is a Bronze Age burial mound on Beeley Moor. A pretty cool spot but its easy to think you’re lost as you don’t seem to get anywhere and the paths aren’t that well trodden (even in summer)

The views from the tops are great and the footpaths do get better shortly after the burial mound, almost like farm tracks through the fields, but it changes again to take you through very overgrown sections of footpath. Navigation isn’t easy without a map through parts of it.

The route

From parking, you’ll head down the country lane in front of you, on the bend in the road, before crossing a stile at a gate and picking up the little wooden signs to see Hob Hurst’s House. Follow these signs across the moors until you reach the bronze age burial site.

On leaving here you’ll pick up slightly better paths and will follow these for a mile or so before heading left just before the main road and by a stream which had us thinking no one had ever been through there before, it was very overgrown but a lot of fun. You’re not in this for long through and you’ll soon cross into the Chatsworth estate where the parkland setting makes walking so much easier.

Stick on the path you’re on all the way through the Chatsworth Estate, you’ll pass Jubilee Rock, lots of cross country horse jumps and then arriver at the game larder and Chatsworth House, before following the riverside path and up the steep country lane back to the car.

Tips & what to bring

Long trousers and waterproofs and good footwear, think changing weather, overgrown paths and ticks. Pack plenty of water and snacks as there isn’t a lot on route until you reach Chatsworth about 8 miles in.

Eat & drink nearby

There’s a restaurant and coffee vans in the stable yard at Chatsworth for refreshments on route. If you don’t mind a short drive after your walk then there’s a couple of pubs in the nearby village of Rowsley, The Peacock is a favourite of ours and theres also the market towns of Matlock and Bakewell only a short drive away where you’ll find even more choice.
