Join free to downloadThis walk is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, with not only one but two sets of stepping stones, a deep gorge and a boardwalk leading you riverside and through the most tranquil setting. Chee Dale is a must see and this short three and a half mile circular walk will take you to the best bits, without having to spend the whole day exploring.
What to expect
This route is easy to follow, the river does the hard work for you, you just go with it. In summer the path is usually pretty good, although you can still expect muddy sections after heavy rain, in winter it can be hit and miss.. sometimes the stepping stones flood making in impassable.
It can also get busy at peak times which does make navigating the stepping stones quite tricky, especially the second set as they’re quite long and you can’t see the other end before starting to walk across them..
Getting there & parking
Parking – Wye Dale Car Park – SK17 9TE. This car park is right along the riverside, there is also limited FREE parking further up the road at Topley Pike lay-by, just be aware that there is a steep hill to climb down and back up if you park here.

The route
This is a beautiful circular route, first following the river and then looping back around come return to the start on the Monsal Trail.
Tips & what to bring
We mentioned this briefly earlier but after heavy rain, this route is best avoided as the stepping stones flood making it impassable. Definitely save this one for drier times.

There’s no places for refreshments directly on this trail but Buxton is only a 15 minute drive away, where you’ll find lots of choices from pubs, cafes and shops.
