Join free to downloadThis 4 mile circular walk through one of the most breathtaking spots in the Peak District was discovered completely by accident. We headed for sunrise at Winnats Pass, which never happened so we decided to explore some new footpaths and found this route. This has since become one of our favourites on cloudy mornings.

What to expect
You’ll walk through the dramatic Winnats Pass, head into one of the prettiest villages in the Peak District and find quiet footpaths that you’d never expect to find so close to such a popular area.
As much of this route is over fields it can get quite muddy especially in the winter, but sunrises from Winnats Pass are arguably better at this tie of year too, plus a much more reasonable time to get up. Sheep also graze along much of this route so please keep dogs on leads.

Getting there & parking
There are roadside lay-bys at the top of Winnats Pass, use postcode S33 8WA but these do fill up quickly, especially if sunrise is looking promising. If you do arrive to find them full, there are also lots of car parks in the village of Castleton.
Good to know
You'll find free (limited) parking at the start of the walk. Postcode for sat nav: S33 8WA.
Yes, along the route.
On lead only.
Expect valleys, village footpaths & fields underfoot.

Tips & what to bring
The weather changes quickly in this valley so always make sure you have warm layers and waterproofs as well as good boots, especially for the field footpath sections.
Eat & drink nearby
There are many pubs and cafes in Castleton for mid hike refuels. We can also recommend The George in Hathersage for great food, especially the wood fired pizza.
