Parys Mountain – North Wales or Mars?

This place is like no where we’ve ever been or anything like we expected with the name. Parys Mountain is an ancient copper mine and in the 1780’s was the largest in the world! It has striking craters with amazing colours, it really does feel like you’re walking on Mars.

What to expect

The main paths here are pretty good and solid but they do get muddy after heavy rainfall. We’d definitely recommend staying on these paths as smaller ones can be very uneven and loose in places. There are open mine shafts on the site too, stay away from these.

Look out for the windmill and a trig point, this is located at the highest point on site at 147m.

Getting there & parking

FREE car park – LL68 9RE. The car park fits about 20 cars and we’ve never struggled getting parked here.

More of a go out and explore than a route. Enjoy looking at the amazing colours, the craters, the unusual landscape, think of how busy it would have been in its day, its an amazing place that you shouldn’t rush. Don’t miss the windmill and trig point while you’re out there.
