What to expect

Expect birdsong, the peaceful sound of flowing water and quiet trails. You’ll leave the busy little town of Builth Wells and in half a mile will feel like you’ve got the place to yourself. We spotted a kingfisher and lots of red kites on this route as well as trout in the river Wye.

This route passes through farmland with sheep grazing so dogs will need to be kept on the lead.

Getting there & parking

The Groe car park – LD2 3BG. This is the main town centre car park with free toilets and free overnight parking but there are many options in town.

The route

This route starts in the Builth Wells before following the river upstream, you’ll cross the bridge to cut across farmland before picking the river back up. We walked to Cwm Wye campsite, where we were staying which was at the turning back point on the map but as its an out and back route you can turn back whenever you’re ready.

Tips & what to bring

This is a great route for a picnic as there are beautiful riverside spots all along the route. We also passed a few wild swimmers on the opposite side and noticed some easy and shallow to get in spots, as always do take care when going wild swimming as it can be dangerous due to hidden dangers including under water currents and cold water shock.

Eat & drink nearby

The are a number of great food spots in Builth Wells including The White Horse, where you’ll get an amazing burger, if you want a homemade style meal, try out The Drovers Cafe and restaurant and for the most delicious cakes we had on this trip try Cwtsh Cafe – the portions here are huge too.
