Looking for a short Peak District hike that’s packed with adventure, breathtaking views, and a touch of challenge? The Dragon’s Back walk near Earl Sterndale is one of Derbyshire’s most iconic ridge hikes. This 5-mile circular takes in the dramatic limestone peaks of Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill, with their unmistakable “dragon’s back” ridge lines, no wonder it was used as a filming location in the popular TV series of ‘Peaky Blinders’.

This route is best suited to confident hikers with good footwear — expect steep climbs, uneven terrain, and exhilarating ridge walks. The reward? Some of the best 360° views in the Peak District, all within a relatively short distance.

Where to Start: Earl Sterndale

The walk begins in the quiet village of Earl Sterndale, just south of Buxton. Unlike some of the more tourist-heavy Peak District villages, Earl Sterndale is peaceful with plenty of on-street parking, making it an ideal base for this hike.

We recommend starting early for sunrise or timing your walk for sunset — the golden light over the limestone ridges makes this hike truly magical.

Route Overview (5 miles / 8km, moderate to challenging)

From Earl Sterndale, the route follows country lanes before dropping into the beautiful Dowel Dale. This hidden valley has been compared to Winnat’s Pass, but it’s smaller, quieter, and far less crowded.

From here, the climb begins onto Chrome Hill. Once you reach the top, you’ll see exactly why this hike is known as the Dragon’s Back. The undulating ridge resembles the spines of a dragon, winding across the Peak District landscape.

Next, you’ll head to Parkhouse Hill, which is shorter but much steeper and more technical than Chrome Hill. The path up is loose underfoot and can be slippery, so take your time and ensure you have sturdy footwear. The climb is worth it though — the summit offers jaw-dropping views across the Upper Dove Valley.

The return route loops back via fields and lanes to Earl Sterndale, completing a satisfying circular walk.

Why Choose the Dragon’s Back Hike?

• Short but adventurous hike (around 5 miles)

• Ideal for hikers wanting a challenge without committing to a long-distance trek

• Incredible ridge views from Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill
